Killarney 2007
Between 27th May and 2 June 2007 a group of 45 ramblers visited Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland for a week's walking holiday led by Pakie and Aidan.
Monday 28th
High Level
Coach to Kate Kearney's Cottage (GR V8809 8881)
Walk southwards through the Gap of Dunloe to the Head of the Gap (GR V8716 8374) passing Black Lake, Cushnavalley Lake, and Auger Lake. Climbing to stream (GR V8749 8379) and via stream to Glas (Green) Lough (GR V8780 8443). From there rising onto ridge and climbing Purple Mountain (GR V8868 8522) elevation 832 metres. From there descending north-east to saddle and rising to Shehy Mor (Big Shehy) (GR V8944 8585) elevation 757 metres. From there descending north to saddle and rising to Tomies Mountain (GR V8950 8676) elevation 735 metres. From there descending steeply northwards to saddle and on to 568 meter point (GR V8912 8746) and further descending (again steeply) to track at GR V8881 8931. On via this track and surfaced road to Kate Kearneys Cottage. Views on top westwards to Macgillycuddy's Reeks (stacks) ridge (serrated), southwards over Upper Lake and Black Valley, eastwards towards the lower lake (Lough Leane) and Torc and Mangerton (with Devil's Punchbowl) Mountains.

Low Level
By Coach to Fossa (GR V9224 9205) and walking eastwards via Fossa Way and O'Mahony's Point (Golf Club) to Knockreer (Cnoc na Ri - the hill of the king) (GR V9526 9140) viewing point - views south of Lough Leane and Purple/Tomies Mountains, south west of Magillycuddys Reeks, south east of Torc (Boar), Mangerton and Crohane mountains, and east of Derry na Saggart Mountains and the Paps. On to Ross Castle (GR V9494 8873) via Knockreer House, Deenagh Lodge, parkland, the Game Wood (alder), lakeshore, and Reen Point (GR V9402 8964). Circuit of Ross Island including Copper Mines (GR V9444 8802) and Governor's Rock returning to Ross Castle and from there to "The Laurels" (GR V9652 9071), Killarney via Killarney House.

Tuesday 29th
High Level
Coach to Mangerton Car Parking (Toureencormick battle field site) (GR V9839 8482) and ascending via track to 300 meter contour (GR V9847 8371) and contouring eastwards to Loch Garagarry inflow (GR V9978 8269). Some of party ascending directly to ridge beneath Stoompa while others circuited lake southwards to join ridge at a lower point and work up to rejoin. All regrouped to climb Stoompa (GR V1006 8180) elevation 705 metres and work on southwards and then westwards around the rim of the Horses Glen (overlooking Lough Managh and Lough Erhogh) to Mangerton summit (GR V9803 8079) elevation 839 metres, and on around the rim of the Devil's Punchbowl to its outlet (GR V9753 8172) and descending from there to the car park via the path. Then by Coach to Molly Darcy's. Views eastward into the Cappagh Glen and of Bennaunmore and Crohane mountains with the Derry na Saggart mountains beyond, southwards to the Kenmare river and the Caha Mountains on the Beara Penninsula beyond, and westwards to the Purple/Tomies Mountains with the Reeks beyond.

Low Level
By Coach to Castlelough (GR V9747 8840) and walking via Jaunting Car Track into Muckross Estate. Then by lakeshore path to Arthur Vincent House and adjacent cave (GR V9616 8644 ish). The via Reenadinna Yew Wood to Kilbeg Bay (limestone formations) and onto Muckross House via Dundag Bay (audio-visual display and visit to Muckross Gardens). Then to Torc Waterfall (GR V9667 8453) and circuit of Muckross Lake (via Dinish Cottage GR V9368 8526) to Molly Darcy's.

Wednesday 30th
Joint Walk
Coach to Ross Castle (GR V9492 8873) and by boat via Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, (disembarking at Dinish Cottage and re-embarking at Old Weir Bridge), The Long Range, and The Upper Lake to Lord Brandon's Cottage (GR V8858 8201). Smaller group to Galway's River/Queens Cottage (GR V9114 8128). Walk eastwards via Kerry Way to Galway's Bridge (N71 road) (GR V9142 8027) and on to Old Kenmare Road heading north-eastwards below Cromaglen Mountain and via Esknamucky Glen and Core's Cascade to upper Torc carpark (GR V9669 8410). Then by Coach to Molly Darcy's.

Thursday 31st
High Level
Coach to Lisleibane (GR V8265 8763) and walk via path into Coomcallee (Hags Glen) between Lough Gouragh and Lough Callee to GR V8157 8461. Skirting Lough Gouragh to climb into Coimin Iochtarach (GR V8082 8487) and on via Coimin Lair (GR V8051 8486) to Coimin Uachtarach (GR V8031 8485) or The Devil's Looking Glass - elevation 707 metres. On via O'Sheas Gully to the Beenkeragh-Carrauntoohil ridge (GR V8006 8457) elevation 910 metres and from there to Carrauntoohil (GR V8035 8442) elevation 1039 metres. Descending to the top of the Devil's Ladder (GR V8069 8368) elevation 734 metres and then ascending to Cnoc Toinne (GR V8114 8337) elevation 842 metres, from which descent made via zig-zag path to Hags Glen and walk out to Lisleibane and coach. Views from below of eastern Reeks Ridge (Big Gun and Cnoc na Peiste [Hill of the Snakes] ) and The Bone (spur ascending to ridge). Views from above west over Iveragh Penninsula (Ring of Kerry) and south to Kenmare River.

Joint Walk
By coach to The Climber's Inn, Glencar (GR V7240 8407) and walking via the Kerry Way by the Caragh River to the Windy Gap (GR V6747 8843) elevation 336 metres and on to Glenbeigh village (GR V6697 9107) returning by coach. Views northwards from the Windy Gap of Dingle Bay and of the Dingle Peninsula - Inch Strand and Rossbeigh Strand.
